The university was inaugurated by Prime Minister Göran Persson on 6 February 1999. On 7 October that same year, the university board decided that the university should arrange an annual academic celebration on the Saturday closest to the inauguration date. Örebro University’s annual celebration includes doctoral promotions, professor installations and award ceremonies.
The basis for the form of the annual academic celebration is found in the European university tradition with roots in the middle ages, which in turn was inspired by symbols from Antiquity and church rituals. For Örebro University it was natural to take similar ceremonies at Uppsala University as its model.
