Bring your family

Accomodation

Örebro University can not offer any housing options for families. Accomodation has to be found on the private market and we would like to point out that this can be difficult. The housing situation in Örebro is somewhat strained and therefore it can be easier to find housing in the towns surrounding Örebro and commute by car, bus or train.

We advise you to plan at least a year ahead if you wish to find accomodation suitable for a family with children.

Please turn to the contact person at your hosting school at an early stage for advice.

Visa, residence permit and health insurance

If you plan to bring your family to Örebro, they may also need a visa or a residence permit, depending on their citizenship and length of stay. They also need to make sure that they have some form of healthcare coverage in Sweden. The EU funded organisation Euraxess has got more information regarding social security and the school system in Sweden on their website.

Home insurance

If you plan to bring your family and stay for less than a year, there are some things to think about when you purchase a home insurance.

Pre-schools, schools and child-care

If you have children, you should locate a pre-school or school as early as possible. The law prescribes that all children and young people in Sweden have to go to the nine-year compulsory school. The pupils receive free tuition, free study material and free lunch.

There are two kinds of compulsory schools in Örebro; municipal compulsory schools and independent, or "free", compulsory schools. The independent schools usually have a certain profile, e.g. music or English. The independent schools are run by a body other than the municipality and comply with the same laws and policy as the municipal compulsory school.

Örebro municipality has got information in English about the schools in Örebro in general on their website. Please note that there is a pdf file on the right hand side of the page that describes preschool class, compulsory school and recreation centre.
