Visa and permits

EU/EEA citizens

As an EU/EEA citizen you have the right to work in Sweden without a work and residence permit. The same applies to your family members. You and your family members are entitled to begin working immediately. If you would like to stay longer than three months, you have to register with the Swedish Migration Board.

Non-EU/EEA citizens

You must have a residence permit if you wish to work as a visiting researcher in Sweden for a period exceeding three months. Visiting researchers who will work in Sweden for a period shorter than three months do not need a residence permit. Citizens of certain countries must however have a visa in order to be allowed to enter Sweden. In order to be granted a permit you must have a valid passport and a hosting agreement (for visiting researchers) or an acceptance letter (for doctoral students) from the host university. Contact your hosting school for more information regarding hosting agreement or acceptance letter.

Please note that there are different forms for residence permit to fill in depending on whether you are a visiting researcher or a doctoral student.

Important! Changes from May 20, 2011

Those who are granted residence permits in Sweden currently receive permit stickers affixed into their passports. Starting from 20 May 2011, stickers will be replaced with a residence permit card (UT card).
