Visa and Residence Permits

Depending on where you come from, you may need to apply for a residence permit before you come to Sweden.

European Union Students

If you are a citizen of a member country of the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA) you do not need a permit to enter Sweden. If your stay exceeds three months you must register your right for residency at the Migration Board in Sweden. You can register when you are here in Örebro. You are allowed to work during the period of study. If you are not a citizen of a member country of the EU or the EEA you must apply for residence permit before entering Sweden.

Switzerland

If you are a Swiss citizen you have to apply for a residence permit in Sweden if your stay exceeds three months. You can apply for it when you are here.

Non-European Union Students

All students coming from countries outside the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA) are required to obtain a residence permit (visa) before entering Sweden. Please get in touch with a Swedish Consulate/Embassy as soon as possible to get further information on what is required in order to obtain the residence permit.

Make sure to take necessary actions, as soon as you receive your Notification of selection results. You will need the Notification of selection results when applying for the residence permit so take good care of it.

If you must pay tuition fees, the advance payment must be made before a residence permit can be granted. You will not need to send in a receipt of payment to the Swedish Migration Board. The Board will obtain the information from the institution when you have paid.

You are allowed to work during the period of study as long as you have a valid residence permit.

More information about the process can be found on the website of the Swedish Migration Board. Please use the provided links on the right.
