Websites Censorship in the Arab World – A Study
Abstract
The research is an attempt to examine the aspects of website censorship in the Arab world from four aspects. The first is about the mechanisms and means applied by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to censor websites. The second is on the motives behind those acts of censorship. The third is the perceived impact of such censorship, while the fourth and final aspect deals with the methods and approaches, both technical and non-technical, which could successfully circumvent website censorship.
In the process of carrying out the study, substantial background information will be provided concerning the Internet in general and its application in the Arab world in particular. A few Arab countries would be taken as a case study in an effort to answer the research questions and a generalization would hence be attempted. Furthermore, both quantitative and qualitative research methods will also be used to achieve triangulation when possible.
