Guidelines and Forms for Master's Thesis

The Master's thesis in Robotics and Intelligent Systems is a full semester course - 30 ECTS credits. The process of completing the thesis consists of:

  1. Topic Approval [form]
  2. Mid-term Presentation
  3. Submission of Report and Selection of Evaluation Committee [form]
  4. Final Presentation

1. Topic Approval

Every student must individually select a topic for the thesis work. A topic can be chosen from a set list, which is presented in December of every year. Alternatively, a student may propose a topic to a chosen supervisor. It is possible that certain topics are affiliated with companies via the AASS research center. The approval form must be signed by the main supervisor (employed at Örebro University).

2. Mid-term Presentation

Half way during the spring semester, students must give a mid-term seminar where they present their progress so far and the remaining activities. The presentation is given to the AASS research group and other masters students. Presentations are approx. 12-15 minutes each, including questions.

3. Submission of Report and Selection of Evaluation Committee.

At least two weeks prior to presentation, an approval form signed by the supervisor is to be submitted. The form is to approve the quality of the written report and confirm that the goals of the thesis project have been met and the student is ready to be graded. The student, together with the supervisor, must select 2 researchers to review, grade the thesis, and attend the final presentation. No more than 1 ph.d. student may participate on the grading committee. If the thesis work is delayed, the form must still be submitted stating the reason for the delay.

4. Final Presentation

There are three opportunities to present the final thesis during an academic year: June, September or December. The exact date of the final presentation is determined by the program responsible. The presentation lasts 20 minutes and is followed by a 20 minute question period. First questions are asked by each of the committee members then asked by the audience. After 40 minutes the presentation concludes and the committee members and supervisor assign a grade for the student work. In short, students are graded both on the quality of the thesis, the performance during the process, and their ability to complete the thesis on time i.e. within 20 weeks.
