About Magnus Johansson

Research Focus

Magnus Johansson is a molecular virologist with research centered around understanding the life cycle of flaviviruses primarily the Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus. His work includes a wide range of aspects, including understanding molecular interactions between viruses and host cell immune responses, developing replicon models and infectious clones for vaccine development as well as gaining insights into the molecular epidemiology and distribution of TBE.

Career Overview

Magnus Johansson completed PhD in 1998 at Stockholm University, where his research focus was on the genetic and metabolic regulation of nitrogen metabolism in bacteria. His specific emphasis was on signal transduction, protein expression, and covalent modification.

In 1999, he was appointed a post-doctoral fellowship at James Cook University in Queensland, Australia. During his time at JCU, he developed skills as a molecular virology by studies on the Dengue virus, a mosquito-borne flavivirus that causes severe hemorrhagic fever in various parts of the world. His research centered on elucidating the cell-biological roles of NS5, which is the viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase.

Magnus Johansson commenced his role as a principal investigator in 2001, initially at Stockholm University. Subsequently, in 2002, he was granted a position of assistant professor by the Swedish Research Council, specifically for work on the biodiversity of the TBE virus. He later moved his research group to Södertörn University, where he was appointed as Associate professor in 2007. In 2008, he successfully completed the MAL program (Morgondagens Akademiska Ledarskap), a leadership education program within the SUUN-network.

In 2012, he moved his research group to the School of Medical Sciences Örebro University where he has had the positon as deputy head of School since 2015. In 2017, he was appointed as a Professor in Biomedicine with a specialization in Biochemistry.
