About Ernesto Alfaro-Moreno

Since the mid 1990s I have been working on the toxicological characterization of inhaled particles, focusing mainly on urban particulate matter, but working also with indoor particles and nanomaterials. I got my Ph.D. from the National Autonomus University of Mexico in 2004. In 2006 I move to Leuven, Belgium to work as a postdoctoral fellow under the gidance of Professors Ben Nemery and Peter Hoet. In 2008 I went back to Mexico to lead the laboratory of Environmental Toxicology at the National Cancer Institute. In 2015 I came to Sweden to work for Swetox and since September 2018 I have been affilitated to Örebro University.


My main interest is the evaluation of the local and systemic endothelial dysfunction induced by PM10, PM2.5 and nanoparticles. We are focused on characterizing PM10 and PM2.5, evaluating the effects that particles have when epithelial cells, endothelial cells and monocytes are exposed. We are measuring cytotoxic and genotoxic effects, proinflammatory molecules, adhesion molecules and its receptors. We are developing and improving in vitro models, recreating the alveolo-vascular communication.
