About Gunnel Karlsson
I am senior lecturer in Gender Studies and also research coordinator of GEXcel (GEXcel International Collegium for Advanced Transdisciplinary Gender Studies (www.gexcel.org). I have earlier worked at the University of Gothenburg as a lecturer and head of the Department for Gender Studies and as head of the National Secretariat for Gender Research.
In my research I have been focusing on women in politics and in my dissertation (in history) "From Brotherhood to Sisterhood" (1996) I investigated the Swedish Social Democratic Women's Federation's struggle for influence and power in the male dominated Social Democratic Party. I particularly looked into conflicts between men and women during the 1950s to the end of the 1970s. I have also been studying the regulation of prostitution in Gothenburg 1862-1918.
Currently I am working with a project that I call "The Making of a Political Woman" where I particularly study Ulla Lindström, who was the only women Minister in a government led by prime minister and party leader Tage Erlander 1954-66. I have written a couple of articles and presented papers at conferences, among others at the European Social Science History Conference in Vienna last spring (2014).
