About Mio Skagerkvist
Mio works within a research project aimed at the presence of high-fluorinated substances, per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) in runoff water from waste facilities. The PFAS compound group has certain special properties, in particular by being both water and dirt repellent. This property is highly desirable in many consumer products; unfortunately it has been shown that some of these substances can be harmful to humans and animals. PFAS is produced industrially and does not occur naturally in the environment. There is a considerable risk that these chemicals will end up in the nature along the product chain producer, consumer and finally waste. Identifying direct and indirect sources for PFAS is important in order to reduce the spread to the environment. Mio's research is to characterize PFAS in contaminated water and to evaluate cost-effective remediation techniques.
