About Sara Karlqvist
Sara Karlqvist is a resident physician at the department of gastroenterology at Örebro University Hospital. She is also a doctoral student at the Faculty of Medicine and Health at Örebro University. The aim of her research is to improve healthcare and ultimately quality of life for patients suffering from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). She wants to increase the knowledge about treatment in IBD by exploring the effectiveness and complications of different biological treatment.
Today, up to 1% of the population in Sweden suffer from inflammatory bowel disease, which is a chronic disease that can affect people of all ages. The two main forms, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, can cause symptoms as abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea. Without proper treatment the disease can have a major impact on a patient’s quality of life, including need for surgery and hospitalization. Medical treatment of the disease has greatly improved the last decades, which has led to that fewer patients need to undergo surgery. These medicines are called biological treatment and they consist of several subtypes of treatment with different mechanisms of action. Although the medications can be effective, they are expensive and can be associated with side effects. Therefore, it is important to study the drugs in both terms of safety and effectiveness. Important research questions are for instance: How many of the patients respond to treatment? Are there subgroups that respond better or worse? Can we predict which patients will benefit from which treatment? This is essential knowledge to be able to choose the best treatment for the individual patient.
