The project addresses gender challenges in external research funding, in national and comparative perspective. It is drawing on earlier work at European level (EU expert report Gender Challenge in Research Funding 2008; EU GenSET project). How is external research funding related to the persistent gender imbalances in academia, science and knowledge production? What is the role of European and national funding agencies in promoting gender equality? Advancing excellence in research funding and promoting gender equality – are they incompatible goals? What kind of gender dynamics in research funding can be identified when focusing on research groups? The theoretical approach combines several research fields: social and feminist studies of SET; gender and organisations; and critical studies on men and masculinities.
