Continued access to and reuse of data

If you are the primary researcher of a project and leave before completion various options are possible. The decisions made will not only depend on Örebro University but also the arrangements and facilities at the future organization.

  • handing over the project to another researcher at ORU
  • continuing to act as PI through an affiliation with ORU
  • or moving the project to a different organization.

Decisions need to be made on the following topics:

Agreements
Agreements may need to be set up. If you plan on continuing to lead a research project at ORU after you leave or collaborate on a project, agreements will need to be put in place specifying your work as well as agreements on data handling in the project.

Funding agencies
Moving an ongoing project requires the funding agency to be notified, as well as the change of the institution responsible on ethical approval. Make sure that any amendment is sent to EPM.  Always do this in conjunction with the new line manager/huvudman.

Ethics
If you plan to reuse data collected in a previous research project, you may need to apply for a new ethical approval. This applies even if the data was originally collected with consent, especially when the new use differs from the original purpose or involves sensitive personal data. Ethical approval is required under Swedish law (SFS 2003:460) for research involving humans, including the reuse of data that contains personal or sensitive information.

GDPR / personal data
GDPR agreements are always needed when processing personal (including sensitive data) from ORU at another institution. This applies to ongoing data projects and future reuse of previously collected data.
