There are significant challenges in understanding the causes and consequences of metabolic diseases like adult-onset (type 2) diabetes. One aspect is that causes of the disease are accumulated over many years, making it difficult to identify important exposures that occurred many years before diagnosis. It can be similarly problematic to identify the full extent of the harm done by metabolic diseases like diabetes, as they often remain undiagnosed for many years, but still resulting in adverse health consequences. It is therefore essential to adopt a life-course epidemiology approach: using information collected on multiple aspects of people’s lives over many years.  This type of research often benefits from combining biological measurements with other lifestyle aspects to better understand causes, severity and consequences of disease.
