Environment, Diet and Health

How do the food we eat and the environment we live in affect our health throughout life?
Within the focus area Environmental Impact, Diet and Health, we investigate how interactions between diet and various environmental factors influence the risk of developing common chronic diseases. Our research explores, among other things, how the gut microbiome, immune system, metabolism, and the body’s protective barriers respond to substances in our environment and in the food we consume.
The goal is to increase our understanding of how the combined environmental exposures we experience throughout life—known as the exposome—interact with diet and influence health.
This research area is conducted in collaboration with Örebro University’s strategic research profile Pollutants and Society and the European research infrastructure EIRENE, where Örebro University plays a leading role in research on the relationships between the exposome, diet, and the gut microbiome.
