Orientation Programme

ESN OP

As an exchange student at Örebro University, we offer you an orientation programme (OP) running for three-five weeks at the beginning of each semester. During this period, loads of social activities, useful lectures and other big events are planned to make your start in Sweden as easy and fun as possible.

The OP is divided in an academical, a practical and a social part. The social part will be organized by the non-profit student association Erasmus Student Network (ESN) and comes with a participation fee of approximately 600 SEK. The academical and practical parts are organized by the international office. We highly recommend you participate in the OP which will guide you to your new life here in Sweden.

Monday - Wednesday, August 19-21: Arrival Days

The official arrival days for the autumn semester will take place on campus between 9.00 - 16.00 on Monday 19th, Tuesday 20th and Wednesday 21st of August, 2024. If you have signed up for the OP and have been assigned to an ESN faddergroup then you will be greeted by your fadders at the bus stop called "Universitetsplatsen" and they will help you get settled in on campus. Afterwards you are welcome to join their "arrival camp", taking place in Novahuset. 

During these hours you will be able to collect your keys for your accommodation at the Housing office in the building Långhuset, as well as meet the team of the International office for an ID-check. Please note that the ID-check is mandatory and necessary in order to get you registered on your first course(s).

Thursday August 22: Trip to IKEA

It's IKEA time! This afternoon, we are going to IKEA to get all the things you might need in your new accommodation. The busses will leave from campus at 12:00 right outside Info Centre (the middle of the building) in Långhuset, and we will be back at around 16:00.

For those of you who have not been to an IKEA before, this is where you will find typical Swedish food and above all furniture, blankets, pillows, carpets, curtains etc. and just everything you might need to get your room to feel a bit more like home!

Monday August 26: Welcome Reception and Campus Tour

The welcome reception is a mandatory session where you get to meet the team of the International Office, your fellow international classmates and ESN Örebro and get valuable information about your exchange stay here in Örebro.

After the presentation from the International office you will be divided into smaller groups and taken on a campus tour with the ESN fadders.

In addition to the campus tour provided by ESN, we also recommend our exchange students to download the app "Mazemap" to easily find their way on campus.

Tuesday August 27: Get Connected

What is an ORU-account? How do I activate wifi and the printing system? And what on earth is an activation key? This pre-recorded videoguide will help you prepare for your studies here at Örebro University to the fullest!

  • In order to activate your ORU-account you will need your t-number and activation key, which all new international students will receive upon arrival after registration, from the International Office.

Thursday August 29: Library Tour

You will get a private tour of the library and learn how to best use it during your studies. The librarians will get you prepared for everything you need to know about books, databases and scientific articles, and also show you the facilities you have access to as a student of Örebro University.

Please join the library your with your fadder group according to the schedule below:

  • Fadder groups 1 + 2: 11:00 - 12:00
  • Fadder groups 3 + 4: 13:00 - 14:00
  • Fadder groups 5 + 6: 14:00 - 15:00

Please note: If you you are not participating in the OP and does not have a designated fadder group, feel free to join whichever time slot you prefer.

Wednesday September 4: Welcome Fair

Every semester, Örebro University hosts a welcome fair for new students. Over 20 companies and student associations want to meet you to tell you all about what they and Örebro have to offer.

Come and mingle, meet them and get the best start to your studies as possible. Some might also offer free goodies to take or lotteries, so it might be worth to have a look there!

Tuesday September 10: Castle Tour

All our new exchange students are invited by Örebro Municipality to visit one of Örebro's most famous landmarks! Did you know that many chapters in Sweden’s history have been written within Örebro Castle’s hefty walls?  Protected by the fast-flowing River Svartån, the castle has been at the very heart of the city of Örebro since medieval times. 

You will get a private tour with a guide. Find out everything you need to know about how the castle came into being, which kings have been here and some fascinating tales about the prisoners of the past!

Wednesday September 12: How to Write Exams

Today you meet our colleague Sandra Eriksson who works as an exam administrator at Örebro University. She will provide you with all necessary information concerning exams in Sweden, from the mandatory registration to what applies during exam days and in exam halls.

Since the regulations might be different from your home countries and we do not want you to experience any issues with your studies here, it is a mandatory information session, where you will also be able to ask questions.

Friday September 13: Volleyball Tournament

It is finally time for our annual volleyball tournament! All the student sections of Örebro University will march the halls, chant their anthem and support their teams during this amazing competition.

Our exchange students of ESN Örebro have won the title several times, so join the team and play or cheer them on to win the cup once again at one of the biggest highlights of the Orientation Programme!

Wednesday September 19: Academic Writing

During your stay here at Örebro University, most of you need to know how to write academic seminar papers and take-home exams, which might have different requirements than what you are used to at your home university. Sounds challenging? No worries, we got you covered.

During this mandatory session, you will receive useful tips on how to improve your academic writing by our writing instructor Marinette Grimbeek. You are also welcome to ask questions, and book a personal tutoring if you like to.

Friday September 20: Örebro Day

Örebro day is a big parade where all new students take over the city and it's the last activity of the orientation programme that you do not want to miss! It starts with a parade and afterwards all student sections compete against each other on different challenges all over town, with the hopes of bringing home the campus trophy. There will also be a price for the best cheering, music performances and lots of fun!
