We are looking for two senior lecturers in Computer Science for permanent positions at the School of Science and Technology.

Subject area

The subject area for these positions is: Computer Science.

We are looking for strong candidates to further strengthen our competences primarily in computer science but also in electrical engineering, in particular related to robotics and autonomous systems. Topics of interest include signal and image processing, robot manipulation, robot perception, machine learning, motion planning, multi-robot systems, and collaborative and social robotics.

These positions are connected to the Centre of Applied Autonomous Sensor Systems (AASS), which carries out multi-disciplinary research at the intersection of computer science, robotics, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and computer vision. AASS is one of Sweden’s largest research environments in robotics and AI and was established in 1998. Our research is often done in close partnership with world-leading corporations as well as the public sector, and our research contributions are recognised worldwide. Nationally, the research in AI and robotics at Örebro is leading, and this is evidenced by the University’s involvement in a number of high-profile initiatives related to AI (see Örebro University is a modern, broad-based, and growing university, and artificial intelligence is a strong priority here. We endeavour to be an attractive place of work where members of staff feel a sense of pride and satisfaction. You can read more at:

Duties and responsibilities

At Örebro University, a senior lecturer is expected to spend their working hours on research, teaching at all levels, and on any associated public engagement activities. In addition to education, research and collaboration, duties and responsibilities include development work, administration and continuing professional development. Applications for research funding both from national and international agencies are encouraged and supported. Moreover, teaching encompasses supervision, examination, course development, planning and evaluation.

As a university lecturer in computer science you will dedicate yourself to both research and education. We offer BSc and MSc engineering programmes in computer science, as well as a programme for working professionals. Courses include programming, electronics, robotics, image processing, artificial intelligence and machine learning, etc. The languages of teaching are Swedish and English.

Suitable candidates will have opportunities to take on management roles in both research and education (in terms of leading your on group inside AASS, or shaping the education programmes), and in other ways influence and develop the activities at the centre.

Those qualified for appointment as a senior lecturer are applicants who have demonstrated teaching expertise and been awarded a doctoral degree in a subject matter relevant for the position or has the corresponding research competence or some other professional expertise that is of value in view of the subject matter of the position and the duties that it will involve.

A general eligibility criterion for teaching staff at Örebro University is that they have completed courses on teaching and learning in higher education corresponding to 10 weeks. Knowledge and skills equivalent to such courses may also be assessed to establish whether these provide eligibility. A teacher who at the time of appointment lacks such training or the equivalent competence, must complete the required courses no later than within two years of taking up the position.

Assessment criteria

When appointing teaching staff, both the applicant’s research expertise and their teaching expertise will be assessed, and they are to be given equal attention. The assessment is also to consider the applicant’s qualifications and experience from collaboration with the wider community, of which the university is a part, as well as national and international experience and mobility. Teachers are to have the ability to communicate and disseminate information; collaborate and engage with the wider community; and facilitate utilisation of the university’s research. In addition, the applicant’s suitability for the position will be assessed. Suitability refers to the applicant demonstrating the personal qualities required to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities at hand; to be able to cooperate with other members of staff; and to contribute to the development of university operations.

Research expertise

Research expertise is to be demonstrated through independent research contributions and continued scientific publishing following the award of the doctoral degree. Importance shall also be attached to the candidate’s establishment in the research community as well as to their experience of planning, administrating, and leading their own research.

When assessing the research merits of the applicants, the quality and quantity of scientific publications and the candidate’s ability to acquire external research funding will be given considerable attention. A publication record in any of the areas mentioned under “background” is of importance.

Teaching expertise

When defining teaching expertise at Örebro University, three categories are used: teaching approach, how the teaching approach is put into practice, and professional development as a teacher. The applicant’s teaching qualifications are therefore to be documented accordingly and in compliance with Örebro University’s template for teaching portfolios, relating clearly to the values set out in Örebro University’s educational philosophy.

Teaching expertise is to be demonstrated through varying degrees of contributions within teaching, such as planning, execution, evaluation and follow up of teaching activities, as well as supervision and examination. The applicant must be able to account for their teaching outlook and approach and have the ability to reflect on their own pedagogical development as well as on the teacher’s role. The applicant is also expected to have contributed to educational development.

Other assessment criteria

As a person you have great collaborative skills, and are able to work together with co-workers, students, and external stakeholders. Experience from leadership in academia is an additional merit.

Very good communication skills (orally, and in writing), in Swedish and English, are mandatory. If this requirement is not fulfilled for one of the languages a recruitment is still possible if you work actively to acquire the necessary language skills to be able to teach in both Swedish and English in the future.

This is a permanent full-time position. At Örebro University, salary depends on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, and positions announced are, where appropriate, subject to a trial period.
