Engineered nanomaterials and innate immunity: nanosafety and medical exploitation
Professor Diana Boraschi is an immunologist, presently active as Senior Associate Researcher at the National Research Council (CNR) and at the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn in Napoli, Italy. Diana Boraschi studies the mechanisms of innate defence, focusing on the role of macrophages and inflammatory cytokines. Her main interests are the receptors and ligands of the IL-1 family in inflammation and disease, and on abnormalities in monocyte/macrophages activation and the role of innate memory in modulating their activities. In this perspective, she has addressed the impact of engineered nanoparticles in initiating or modulating pathology-related inflammation. She has also initiated the “Immunosafety Task Force” within the EU NanoSafety Cluster, aiming at defining the immunosafety assessment as central part of nanosafety regulations.
