Professor in Information Systems/Informatics

The School of Business is seeking a professor in Information Systems/Informatics for a permanent post.
The position is in Information Systems/Informatics.
The Informatics Department at Örebro University School of Business has a long tradition of research and education and is currently in an expansive phase. Informatics is taught on the Bachelor Programme of Systems Analysis and the Master’s Programme in Information Systems – Information Security Management. The department also offers a study programme at the doctoral level.
The goal for the Bachelor Programme of Systems Analysis is to train IT consultants to be able to integrate organisational development and systems development. Students are therefore trained in a number of different organisational and systems development methods as well as software development environments to provide them with a broad knowledge base within systems development. The goal of the Master’s programme is to develop students’ ability to manage and handle information security in private as well as public organisations. Students are trained to deal with social, administrative and technical safety measures as an integrated whole.
Research in Informatics is pursued within the research environment Centre for Empirical Research on Information Systems (CERIS) and deals with the digitalisation of organisations and society. CERIS conducts research in a number of application areas such as: automated decision-making/AI; eHealth; digitalization of government; digitalization of developing countries; crisis management; information security; digitalization of school and systems development methods.
Örebro University School of Business is in need of recruiting a professor in information systems/informatics that can support, strengthen and take a lead in CERIS research.
Duties and responsibilities
As a rule, a professor spends the bulk of their working hours on research. A professor is also expected to work actively to bring in external research grants to the subject area, take an overall responsibility for its research activities, and monitor developments within the subject field internationally. A professor is expected to be involved at all three levels of higher education and to disseminate information on and collaborate around their own and the department’s research activities.
A professor is moreover expected, within the scope of their employment, to make themselves available for executive and administrative assignments at the University.We wish that you can play a central and leading role in scientific collaboration and development of the subject. Considering the nature of the tasks, high attendance at the workplace is important.
A person who has demonstrated both research and teaching expertise is qualified for employment as a professor.
A general eligibility criterion for permanent teaching positions at Örebro University is that the applicant has completed courses on teaching and learning in higher education corresponding to 10 weeks. Knowledge and skills equivalent to such courses may also be assessed to establish whether these provide eligibility. This assessment will be made by Örebro University. For appointment as professor, the applicant must also have completed courses on doctoral supervision. A professor who at the time of appointment does not meet these criteria must complete the required courses no later than within two years of taking up the position.
When appointing teaching staff, both the applicant’s research expertise and their teaching expertise will be assessed, and as much attention is to be given to the applicant’s teaching expertise as to their research expertise. In the assessment, experience and qualifications in terms of collaboration with the wider community, of which the University is a part, will be evaluated, as will national and international experience and mobility. In addition, applicants’ suitability for the post will be evaluated, as will, their leadership skills. Suitability refers to the applicant demonstrating the personal qualities required to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities at hand; to be able to cooperate with other members of staff; and to contribute to the development of university operations.
The applicant’s research expertise will be assessed based on their national and international standing and recognition in the research community. Research expertise is demonstrated through independent research contributions, which to a substantial degree exceed those that are required for appointment as a docent, in terms of both quality and the number of publications. Recognition is also demonstrated by means of the applicant’s ability to lead and develop research, as well as through the supervision of doctoral students. It is desirable for applicants to have been the principal supervisor of at least two doctoral students, seeing them through to their thesis defence. Research expertise also encompasses being the principal researcher of projects with research grants that have been secured in competition with others and holding positions of trust in academia.
Particular importance will be attached to the candidate’s qualifications for contributing to future development of research in the CERIS application areas. Candidates should have an established research agenda and must have documented experience from research from at least one of the application areas within CERIS.
As CERIS combines research in more than one application area, particular importance will be attached to the candidate’s qualifications for contributing to a future development of synergies between CERIS’ application areas. Importance will be attached to documented experience of both technical and social science aspects within information systems/informatics.
Documented ability to publish research in international scientific journals is mandatory. Candidates should have documented significant impact in their field(s) of research. High impact reports of relevance for the application areas within CERIS are a merit.
Documented ability from attracting external research funding is mandatory.
Experiences from building international networks as well as membership in editorial boards, research councils, funding bodies or leadership of scientific conferences/workshops are considered additional qualifications. The candidates’ use of both qualitative and quantitative research methods is an additional qualification. Documented experience of using mixed-methods research is considered a merit.
When defining teaching expertise at Örebro University, three categories are used: teaching approach, how the teaching approach is put into practice, and professional development as a teacher. The applicant’s teaching qualifications are therefore to be documented accordingly and in compliance with Örebro University’s template for teaching portfolios, relating clearly to the values set out in Örebro University’s educational philosophy.
The applicant’s teaching expertise will be assessed in terms of the width and scope of various methods and teaching modes applied at the bachelor’s, master’s and/or doctoral levels, including experience of individual supervision at different levels, in addition to the supervision of doctoral students. Documented experience of course- and programme development within information systems/informatics is mandatory.
Moreover, the ability to develop, plan, execute and evaluate modes of teaching and examination, and to contribute to educational development, such as preparing teaching materials, textbooks and/or steering documents relating to teaching will be assessed, as will the ability to maintain a scientific approach in teaching.
Additional assessment criteria for teaching expertise:
The applicant’s collaborative skills will be assessed in terms of the width and scope of the cooperation and/or collaboration undertaken, internationally as well as nationally, within academia and with the wider community.
Applicants’ leadership and administrative skills will be assessed in terms of the scope and width of their qualifications and experience from leadership roles and/or academic assignments within education and research.
Other assessment criteria
Particular importance is attached to suitability, that is, personal characteristics required to perform the duties and responsibilities at hand, to cooperate with other members of staff, and to contribute to the development of Örebro University’s operations. The person we are looking for has good interpersonal and cooperative skills, power of initiative, an interest in development efforts, and the aim set for a career within academia.
Good communicative skills in English, both in speech and writing, are mandatory. Since the candidate must be able to perform administrative and pedagogical tasks that require understanding and use of the Swedish language. We expect a successful candidate to be able to communicate in Swedish, both in speech and writing, within two years.
The position is a full-time, permanent post. The salary depends on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience. Positions announced at Örebro University are, where appropriate, subject to a trial period.
