Program

How to teach notetaking in ELT: An action research intervention. Joseph Siegel, Örebro University.
Notetaking is an important skill, but one many teachers and students take for granted. This presentation reports findings from an action research project involving four in-service upper-secondary school English teachers. The presentation starts by discussing challenges associated with note-taking instruction in a second language and then describes how this group of teachers collaborated to: a) apply pedagogic changes in the classroom; and b) document the affects of these changes. Attendees will gain insights into how reflective practice and pedagogic interventions can improve the teaching and learning of note-taking in EFL/ESL

Grammar for Writing Development: An Action Research Intervention. Claire Hogarth, Örebro University
The ability to express ideas effectively on the sentence level is essential for developing communicative competence as defined by the course and subject syllabi for English in the 2011 curriculum. Yet pedagogies that focus on giving students grammatical options for making choices about sentence-level expression are rarely featured in textbooks. This presentation reports findings from an action research project involving nine in-service secondary and upper-secondary school English teachers. The presentation starts by discussing challenges associated with teaching grammar for writing development and then describes how this group of teachers collaborated to (a) develop materials for teaching grammar for writing development, based on principles inspired by rhetorical pedagogy; (b) apply pedagogic changes in the classroom; and (c) document the impact of these changes. Attendees will gain insights into how reflective practice and pedagogic interventions can improve the teaching and learning of grammar in the English language classroom.
