Identification of disease-associated pathways and biomarkers – a systems medicine approach.

Bild1.jpgMatej Orešič holds a Ph.D. in biophysics from Cornell University (1999; Ithaca, NY, USA). He is a Professor of Medical Sciences, with Specialization in Systems Medicine, at Örebro University, where he leads the Systems Medicine research group. Prof. Orešič is currently also a Guest Professor in Lipids and Nutrition at the Oil Crops Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences in Wuhan and Group Leader in Systems Medicine at the ‘InFLAMES Innovation Ecosystem based on the Immune System’ (Turku Bioscience Centre, University of Turku). As of 2016, he became a Lifetime Honorary Fellow of the Metabolomics Society. Prof. Orešič is co-founder and currently-serving Chair of the Board of the Nordic Metabolomics Society and was elected in 2020 to the Board of Directors of the International Metabolomics Society. Prof. Orešič’s main research areas include application of metabolomics to biomedical research and systems medicine. He is particularly interested in the identification of disease processes as well as environmental, lifestyle and genetic factors, that are associated with different metabolic and immune phenotypes. His research investigates the underlying mechanisms linking these processes and contributing factors with the development of specific disorders or their co-morbidities, with a central focus on type 1 diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and neuropsychiatric disorders. Prof. Orešič also initiated the popular MZmine open-source software project, which led to the development and release of popular software for metabolomics data processing.
