Om Sukithar Rajan
Microorganisms play an important role in mediating human and environmental health. Until recently our views into the microbial world have been obscured, missing the vast majority of microbial diversity, by relying mainly on culture-dependant methods. Next Generation Sequencing has enabled sequencing genetic material in multitude, which in combination with computational analysis and biological methods, revealed profound microbial novelty and diversity. This culture-independent method presents an exciting means to elucidate microbial dynamics, which invariably determine human health and global biogeochemical processes. This approach faces a fundamental limitation in its inability to measure the activities of a microbial community under a given set of conditions.
Gut microbiota play a vital role in maintaining human health. People suffering from different gastrointestinal problems might suffer from altered gut microbiota or their function. It is my personal research interest to try and understand the fluctuation of the composition and function of gut microbiota; sampled from cohorts of people with Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Hereto, I am developing a workflow to predict function and metabolite profiles of gut microbiota, which could be used for identifying potential clinical markers (signatures) or biomarkers. We use existing software like Metaphlan2, Kraken, Clark-S, Picrust, etc and scripting in LINUX, R, and Python; in this endeavour.
Visualization of species-level classification of our data set using Metaphlan2, deciphering the entire composition with special focus on Actinobacteria.
