Abstract

In this short talk, I will (try to) present the scientific context of a new project, titled "Counterfactual Commonsense". The project aims to advance the theory and practice of commonsense spatial reasoning as it is pursued in AI and Spatial Cognition research. Towards this, I will:

  • motivate with basic questions that have driven research in (declarative) commonsense spatial representation and reasoning;
  • pitch "deep (visuospatial) semantics", highlighting most recent outcomes addressing spatio-temporal commonsense, and its applications in visual sensemaking; and
  • position (select) open challenges in reasoning about space, motion, and interaction; some of these challenges are to be addressed as part of project Counterfactual Commonsense.

More broadly, I hope to drive home the point that a robust and formally verifiable (declarative) space-time foundation can integrate with (computational) cognitive modelling methods developed in Cognitive Science. Such multi-faceted integrations will benefit the articulation and development of next-generation AI methods (and applications) where fulfilment of human-centric requirements is slated to acquire a legal or statutory character.
