Lars von Knorring

Lars von Knorring, professor emeritus at Uppsala University, has for decades been a central and leading figure in psychiatric research in Sweden, notably on anxiety and depressive disorders, but also within personality research, health economics research, and register-based research. He was also the initiator of the effective national quality registry for ECT (electroconvulsive therapy), a registry now coordinated from Örebro.

Lars von Knorring has been a driving force in the collaboration between representatives of academic psychiatry in the Nordic countries. For many years, he was also editor-in-chief of the Nordic Journal of Psychiatry. He is an honorary member of the Estonian and Swedish Psychiatric Associations as well as of the Swedish Serotonin Society.

Over the years, Lars von Knorring has undertaken a number of assignments that have benefited Swedish psychiatry greatly;  as chair of the Swedish Agency for Health Technology Assessment and Assessment of Social Services (SBU) working group for assessment of the evidence in anxiety disorder treatments, and as part of the project management team that drafted the National Board of Health and Welfare’s national guidelines for treating depression and anxiety syndrome. Moreover, he has been scientific advisor at the Swedish Medical Products Agency. His solid research career has resulted in more than 350 scientific publications and as a lecturer, his brilliance is widely recognised.

Lars von Knorring has played a crucial role for the development of academic psychiatric research in Örebro, first at the Centre for Psychiatric Research and subsequently at the University Healthcare Research Centre. Thanks to his extensive network, he has opened doors that have facilitated urgent research at our university.
