After several years of inactivity – the Måltidens Hus restaurant has reopened!

Måltidens Hus

Örebro University offers its study programmes in culinary arts and hospitality science at Måltidens Hus. An external company, Syrén Gastronomi, is launching a new lunch service in the building. It will be open both to those teaching and studying at Campus Grythyttan and to the public. In the long term, larger events and concerts may also be held here.

A restaurant to the public at Måltidens Hus in Grythyttan is open again! “It’s been a fantastic start to 2026. You can tell from the name that there has to be a restaurant in Måltidens Hus,” says Erik Löfmarck, Head of the School of Hospitality, Culinary Arts and Meal Science.

Here are all the restaurants on our three campuses

There are eleven restaurants across our campuses. Here are links to their websites and menus.

The restaurant Kantinen Hyttblecket in Måltidens Hus will be managed by the restaurateur couple Sandra and Henrik Syrén Eriksson. They possess extensive experience in the industry and currently operate Big Hill Lodge and Hotell Hertig Karl in Filipstad. They will now also oversee operations in the neighbouring municipality of Hällefors, where Grythyttan is situated.

“Our vision is to revive the countryside and promote local produce,” says Sandra Syrén Eriksson.

“There are many people around Grythyttan involved in the food sector, both in terms of raw ingredients and processing,” adds Henrik Syrén Eriksson.

Concerts on an enchanting land

The focus will be on traditional Swedish home cooking. Initially, the restaurant will be open for lunch on weekdays, but the long-term plan is to expand their activities.

“We’ll also be open for guided tours and special events. We’re starting there to build up our knowledge of the business and then expand with more events, occasional evening services, catering, tastings and talks,” says Sandra Syrén Eriksson.

There are also plans to utilise the large lawn outside Måltidens Hus for concerts.

“It’s an enchanting location! Imagine a stage overlooking the lake – really amazing,” says Sandra Syrén Eriksson.

“Truly long-awaited”

Since December 2021, there has been no lunch restaurant on the premises. At that time, the pandemic forced the previous restaurateur to close the restaurant unexpectedly. Many people driving past Måltidens Hus from the main road have been turned away without having lunch.

“We often receive questions from an interested community about when the restaurant will reopen, so it’s truly long-awaited,” explains Erik Löfmarck, Head of the School of Hospitality, Culinary Arts and Meal Science at Örebro University (RHS).

What does it mean for Campus Grythyttan to have a restaurant open in Måltidens hus?

“A great deal! Among other things, it helps make the campus livelier and provides a better study environment for our students, as well as a better working environment for our staff. It also offers opportunities to organise a variety of events in collaboration with the new restaurant operators, which is exciting. Additionally, it makes it easier for us to accept more internal university requests for conferences and similar events.”

Recently, the entire restaurant has undergone a complete refurbishment by the property owner, Akademiska Hus.

“It’s truly a dream to step into a brand-new kitchen. I don’t believe344 I’ve ever done that before. What a luxury,” says the new restaurateur, Henrik Syrén Eriksson.
