Henrique from Brazil: “The Master’s programme in Musicology at Örebro University is absolutely fantastic”

Henrique Paulino da Silva from Brazil is graduating from the two-year Master’s programme in Musicology at Örebro University. His studies have given him new perspectives on both the subject and life – and sparked a desire to continue in research.
“The programme is absolutely fantastic. We’ve discussed topics from many different fields – from history and philosophy to technology and culture – and analysed music from many perspectives. I feel that my time as a student in Örebro has been enriching, and it has really motivated me to pursue doctoral studies,” says Henrique Paulino da Silva.
Seeking challenges in a new environment
The decision to apply to Örebro University was based on both academic and personal ambitions. He wanted to develop further within his field while challenging himself in a new environment, far from home. The fact that he had encountered research from Örebro University during his studies also played a decisive role.
“A few years ago, I used a book by an Örebro lecturer in a project. It sparked my curiosity about the research and life here,” he explains.
Studying thanks to a scholarship
Henrique Paulino da Silva has been studying on a scholarship from Örebro University, which has been crucial in enabling him to study abroad. The scholarship is aimed at students with very good academic results from countries outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland who pay tuition fees. It covers the full tuition fee, but not living costs.
“It’s not easy to pursue a dream of studying abroad, especially when it’s your first time leaving your home country. The scholarship gave me both the motivation and the opportunity to take this step,” says Henrique Paulino da Silva.
Close to everything – more time for study
There is a significant difference between student life in Sweden and in Brazil. Henrique Paulino da Silva points out that his living situation in Örebro has provided him with better conditions for focusing on his studies.
“In São Paulo, distances are vast, leading to time-consuming commutes wherever you go. Here, I’ve been able to devote all my time to my studies, which has been crucial for my thesis work.”

He also tells how the welcome he received in Örebro, far exceeded his expectations.
“I was pleasantly surprised by the support and trust I’ve encountered in Örebro. Being an international student brings many challenges, but I’ve met lots of people who’ve made my journey easier. And I’ve made some fantastic friends.”
Dreams of conducting research – and helping people
During his time in Sweden, Henrique Paulino da Silva has not only advanced within his field, but also gained new perspectives on life.
“I’ve learnt a great deal, not just academically but also about how to live and build relationships. During my time in Örebro, I’ve experienced difficult events, but also ones that have shown there’s hope for a better future. These are experiences I’ll carry with me.”
Not all the pieces of the puzzle have fallen into place yet, but Henrique Paulino da Silva dreams of a research career and also wants to work on social issues in places where people need it most.
