Can university-driven innovation contribute to both competitiveness and sustainability?

How can research and innovation at universities simultaneously strengthen industrial competitiveness while also contributing to climate and societal sustainability? In this article, Robert Brummer reflects on how interdisciplinary and cross-sector public–private partnerships can generate real societal value—beyond traditional economic metrics.
Drawing on examples from the Swedish initiative PAN Sweden – Plant-based Proteins for Health and Wellbeing, the article illustrates how long-term collaboration between academia, industry, the public sector, and civil society can pave the way for a more sustainable food system. Here, the UN Agenda 2030, public health, and competitiveness are brought together in a shared context, clearly highlighting the role of research in the green transition.
