Set up MFA (multi-factor authentication)

To access the majority of Örebro University’s services and systems, you need an ORU account and must use MFA (multi-factor authentication). MFA means signing in using multiple verification steps.

MFA involves two verification steps:
1 - Enter your username and password.
2 - Verify yourself with an app, with a code on a text message, or similar.

Install Microsoft Authenticator on your mobile phone via the App Store on an iPhone/iPad or from the Play Store on an Android device.


Once the app is installed, move on to register your account for MFA.

For this, you will need a computer and a mobile/tablet.

Go to https://aka.ms/mfasetup on your computer via a web browser of your choice.

Log in with your ORU account

For staff: firstname.lastname@oru.se
For students: username@edunet.oru.se (e.g. vixheh201@edunet.oru.se)

Activate the app

  • Select Next in your browser from your computer.
  • Select Next again.

Connect App and ORU Account

  • Now, launch the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile phone and tap on Scan a QR Code.
  • Scan the QR code with your mobile phone on the computer screen.
  • Once you have scanned the QR code, your ORU account will appear in the Microsoft Authenticator app.
  • Click Next on your computer.

Verify account

  • The service will now verify this.
  • You will now receive a notification in the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile phone. Tap Accept.
  • On  your computer, tap Next.

You have now signed up for MFA.

How often do I need to use MFA?

Expect to need to authenticate when signing in at least once per day. Sometimes more often, depending on how you work, what systems you use, what kind of device you use to access those services, and how often you change your location, e.g. from your workplace to a classroom, to home or some other place.

If you have a computer from the University and are on campus, you will have fewer authentication requirements than if you work elsewhere.

In addition, Office apps require re-authentication with regularity, both on desktop and mobile devices.
