About Dana Sofi
Dana Sofi
Academic Position:
I am a Senior Lecturer in Sociology.
Research:
My research in political sociology focuses on ethnicity, identity politics, civil society organizations (CSOs and NGOs), and public participation. Through fieldwork and a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods, I examine how ethnic groups develop relationships, overcome interethnic conflicts, and build consensus. I am particularly interested in the historical, structural, and institutional factors, as well as social capital, that influence these processes.
In the realm of civil society and public participation, I study how participation can be promoted and how civil society organizations, especially non-governmental ones, can strengthen their roles. I also investigate democratization, socially sustainable development, and participatory methods.
Currently, I am paying special attention to how mutual trust and tolerance are built and how interethnic conflicts can spread across national contexts. An ongoing project focuses on the discourse surrounding "the Swedish social services and the removal of children from migrant families," and how this affects the work of social services. I am also studying how Sweden is portrayed in (Arabic) social media, particularly in relation to LVU campaigns.
Teaching:
I teach sociological and social psychological theory, qualitative methods, philosophy of science, and ethnicity at both undergraduate and advanced levels. Currently, I am teaching sociology courses, courses within the program for social analysis and scientific communication. I also supervise students at the bachelor's and master's levels, as well as internships and practice reports.
