About Enes Efendic

I am a consultant upper gastrointestinal surgeon at Örebro University Hospital with a longstanding interest in foregut surgery, particularly gastroesophageal reflux disease and hiatal hernia. After many years of clinical work in this field, I now have the opportunity to combine this interest with research as a doctoral student at Örebro University.

My doctoral research focuses on hiatal hernia in patients with obesity and after bariatric surgery. Despite being a common clinical problem, there is still limited evidence to guide how hiatal hernia should be evaluated and surgically managed in this patient population. Our research addresses both hiatal hernia identified at the time of primary bariatric surgery and symptomatic hiatal hernia developing after previous bariatric procedures.

A central strength of the project is its close connection to clinical practice. It combines systematic evaluation of the existing evidence with prospective clinical research, including an IDEAL phase 1/2a surgical innovation study evaluating a novel surgical approach. Our aim is to generate clinically relevant evidence that can improve the assessment and treatment of these patients.
