The names of the schools replacing HumUS have been decided

Many of the staff at the two new schools work here at Forumhuset.

The decision has been made by the university board – HumUS is to be divided into two schools.
And now the names of the two new schools have been announced, along with who will head one of them.

Applications are now open for the positions of head of school and deputy head of school

The School of Social Sciences and Media Studies and the School of Humanities and Education.

In Swedish, Institutionen för samhällsvetenskap och mediestudier (ISoM and Institutionen för humaniora och pedagogic, (IHoP).

These are the names of the two schools following the division of the School of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences (HumUS).

The new names take effect on 1 July 2026. The proposed names were developed through an internal process at HumUS and have now been formally adopted through a decision by the vice-chancellor.

The School of Social Sciences and Media Studies (ISoM) will encompass the divisions of gender studies/sociology, media and communication studies, as well as political science, human geography and social studies. The current HumUS management team will continue in their roles: Joel Rasmussen and Jenny Alsarve have been appointed head of school and deputy head of school, respectively, for the period until 31 December 2027.

A great effort is required across the university when one school becomes two. Among other things, signs and websites need updating, and staff need their correct affiliation entered into various systems.

The School of Humanities and Education (IHoP) encompasses just what the name suggests, the divisions of humanities and education.

Örebro University is now seeking a new head of school and deputy head of school.

The background to the division of HumUS is the national reform of teacher education in Sweden, to be implemented by autumn 2027. At that time, higher Swedish-language grade requirements will apply to admitted students, a move expected to result in fewer applications. In preparation, a major review is underway to strengthen the organisation at Örebro University and to prepare for upcoming changes in teacher education (in Swedish). The division of HumUS is part of these efforts.
