Background – AI and Robotics at Örebro University

AI and Robotics.

Örebro University began its research in AI and robotics at the research environment Centre for Applied Autonomous Sensor Systems (AASS) in 1997.

Since then, AASS has grown and currently includes around 70 researchers and has strong funding support from The Knowledge Foundation. Parallel to that development, the interdisciplinary research in AI at Örebro University has also expanded. Today, AI research is conducted in many schools and research groups at the university and in a wide range of subjects, from informatics and biology to law and economics.

Through the various research groups, Örebro University is represented both nationally and internationally in the AI and robotics field. The university is also, through AASS, part of the largest research programme in Sweden, WASP (Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program), and has funding from several sister programmes in the humanities and social sciences, such as WASP-HS.

Outstanding research has given the university a good foundation for building strong courses and study programmes in AI. In addition to a number of AI-related study programmes included in the regular course offering, Örebro University has created a programme with short AI courses aimed at professionals. The university also collaborates with stakeholders both nationally and internationally to raise AI competence within industry.

To further reach out with research results, competence and education, AI and Robotics have launched a collaboration platform, the goal of which is to strengthen the development of both industry and the public sector with the help of AI.

In the next few years, AI and Robotics at Örebro University will focus on research on how groups of autonomous systems can work together with humans. Our vision of the future is AI and robotics – for and together with humans.
