Clean water is a necessity for all life and in the modern society has several used elements the potential to pollute water, making it harmful for the environment or unsuitable for human consumption. Elements in focus are those found as anions, oxyanions and oxycations, in particular fluoride, arsenic and uranium. Active techniques for water treatment are available but little attention has been paid on the use of passive techniques based on by-products such as steel slag and bark. Consequently is the interactions between contaminants and several potential and innovative sorbents largely unknown. In this project is the goal to characterize potential sorbents and study the interactions between sorbents and polluting elements to obtain increased knowledge of the sorbents behavior in different environments and behavior under influence of secondary factors such as natural complexing agents.
