The course aims to provide specific and in-depth understanding of causal inference in social science research. Based on the Potential Outcome Framework (also known as Rubin's causal model), various quantitative, experimental methods for testing causal relationships will be discussed. Particular focus will also be placed on assumptions that enable causal explanations based on this framework. In addition to methods for testing direct effects, the course will also discuss methods for evaluating indirect effects in experimental studies. Philosophical challenges and methodological difficulties associated with causal explanations in social science research will also be addressed in the course.
