Orientation Programme for International Master's Students

Nexus during Örebro Day 2025

Nexus during Örebro Day 2025

At the beginning of the autumn semester, we offer an Orientation Programme (OP) to all international students, with the aim of helping the students connect socially and to settle in on campus, Örebro city and in Sweden. Some of these activities are joint activities with new exchange students, and some are exclusively for international Master’s students (meaning students admitted to an international Master’s programme). There are some activities that are organised by the University, and therefore free of charge, and extra social activities organised by Nexus Örebro that require a participation fee. Nexus and Örebro Student Union

In Sweden, universities have a rich culture when it comes to introduction weeks, with the purpose of welcoming new students to the city and to campus. Örebro Student Union consists of multiple student sections, each connected to specific study subjects of the university, that students can become members in. Since of 2024, the student union now also have an international student section, called Nexus! This section was initially for exchange students, but international Master's also have the chance to join Nexus - for more social activities during the introduction weeks. Even if Master's students are not technically seen as "new students", you are in fact new to Örebro and to Sweden.

Nexus social activities would occur mostly on weekends and evenings and usually includes hang-outs, themed parties, competitions, international dinner, entrance to different bars, restaurants, and clubs, to name a few.

In order to participate on the social activities organised by the student section Nexus, together with all new international students, you must pay a participation fee. When paying the participation fee you will receive a so called "OP-badge", which is used to access the activities, whether it's a pub crawl or other social hang-outs.

The participation fee is not confirmed yet, but usually is around 700 SEK.

International Master's students pay for the OP-badge by card, in person.

  • Since international Master's students are required to be on campus for a physical registration at the start of the semester (for 2026 this is 31st of August), you will get the opportunity to buy an OP-badge during this day.
  • For those that have the opportunity to come to Örebro prior to the start of the semester, you also have the chance to buy an OP-badge during the arrival days for new exchange students - between 9:00 and 16:00 (CEST) on August 17th, 18th and 19th. This means that you can already join some social activities by Nexus two weeks prior to the official start of the OP, as a little head start.

Please scroll down to the calendar for more detailed information.

After paying the OP participation fee in person, you will get access to the complete OP schedule with all activities* by Nexus and the university.

*Remember that the complete OP schedule consists of some activities that are for exchange students only; some are for master's students only; and some are for all international students of ORU. All activities in the schedule will be colour coded and marked for your convenience. We advice that you turn to this website for correct detailed information about the university-organised activities, specifically for international Master's students.

Can I participate in the OP without paying?

Practical, academic and social activities organised by the University are free of charge (meaning, you do not have to become a part of Nexus, nor buy a OP-badge to participate). You can find these OP activities in the calendar below.

We understand that there might be some differences between international Master's students and exchange students - for example in age, perhaps cultural backgrounds or simply the fact that international Master's will stay in Örebro for 2 - 4 semesters, whereas exchange students only stay for 1- 2 semesters. For these reasons we also want to make sure that you can connect with other international Master's students, regardless if you choose to participate in Nexus's social activities or not.

During the semester, the international office will organise a couple of  "International Master's Network" hangouts - aimed for both newly admitted Master's students, and also year two students. The first one being held during the start of the semester (August 31st)* and the second sometime in October (TBD)**.

* See more detailed information in the calendar below.

Communication platforms

The initial communication platform is the official Facebook group for newly admitted Master's students, created by the International office.

If you decide that you want to participate in the social activities by Nexus during the Orientation programme, you will be invited to their WhatsApp groups after the payment of the OP-badge.

International Master's students will also be invited to a separate WhatsApp group, made by one of our student ambassadors, that only includes year one and year two Master's students.

The purpose of this WhatsApp group is for you to connect with other Master's students, and to exchange valuable information with your peers and organise hangouts that are indepentent from the Orientation programme. Meaning, even if you do not pay for the OP-badge with Nexus, you are still able to make new friends with people in the same situation as you on campus.

You will get access to the QR-code for this WhatsApp group during the welcome reception and the International Master's Network hangout, during August 31st.
