"The application process for a scholarship was smooth and well-organised."

Meet Nanduni Daluwatta, a 2025 alumn and former Örebro University scholarship recipient from the Master's programme in Sports Physiology and Medicine. Receiving the scholarship and moving to Sweden was an enriching experience for her, and it made her want to give back.

A straightforward and well-guided process

Nanduni began her studies at Örebro University in autumn 2023. She chose the Master's programme in Sports Physiology and Medicine due to its interdisciplinary approach, commitment to internationalisation, and strong emphasis on applied research. She wanted to build on her academic foundation with a Master's degree that integrated the physiological and medical aspects of sports performance.

After ranking Örebro University as her first choice on the university admissions platform, she was able to apply for the scholarship.

The application process for the Örebro University Scholarship was smooth and well-organised. The instructions on the university’s website were clear, and the online system made it easy to submit all necessary documents. I prepared the required documents, including my CV, a motivation letter, and three recommendation letters from lecturers at Sabaragamuwa University in Sri Lanka, who mentored me throughout my Bachelor’s. I submitted my scholarship application documents to the university after receiving the selection results from UniversityAdmission.se, careful not to miss the deadline.

When asked if she had any advice for future scholarship applicants, Nanduni's first response was to start the process early. She says it is crucial to understand the scholarship requirements, and the study programme. According to Nanduni, this makes it easier to adapt the motivation letter, explaining how the studies would align with her academic background and experiences, as well as what she hopes to achieve during the programme and with a Master's degree. "Be genuine and specific," emphasises Nanduni "to genuinely demonstrate your commitment to the field in question."

Life in Örebro and Sweden has been a mix of new experiences, challenges, and personal growth.

Moving to an entirely new country, with no connections to the people or culture is a big step. Even though it took some time to adjust to the colder climate and other cultural clashes, Nanduni found herself enjoying her life in her new home away from home. She praises the academic environment at Örebro University, its knowledgeable professors, helpful support functions, and the multiple opportunities to learn inside and outside the classroom.

Örebro, with its mix of city life and nature, offers a peaceful yet vibrant environment. I’ve enjoyed the clean air, safety, and well-organised society. I’ve come to appreciate the Swedish values of equality, sustainability, and balance.

She describes student life as vibrant and explains that she signed up for the buddy program to welcome and support new international Master's students, as a way to give back and connect with others.

Becoming a student ambassador felt like a meaningful next step. A way for me to share my experience, support new students, and continue contributing to the community that has given me so much.

Future plans

Nanduni explains that the Sports Physiology and Medicine programme aligns perfectly with her academic interests and future career ambitions, ideally in athletic performance enhancement and health promotion through sports. When asked about her future plans, Nanduni shares her thoughts on staying in Sweden for a few more years, to continue her academic journey, before returning to Sri Lanka. There, she hopes to develop sports science education and research with her new knowledge.

After my studies, I plan to pursue doctoral studies in sports physiology and work toward becoming a researcher and lecturer, focusing on areas such as athlete performance, health, and long-term health and community well-being.

I'm planning to finish SFI and then consult a career counsellor at Komvux. Sweden’s strong research environment and inclusive academic culture have inspired me, and I believe it is a great place to grow professionally.
