Kyra: Örebro in Four Seasons

.

Whether you are in Örebro for only 6 months, a year, or 2, you will encounter different seasons. Different seasons mean different activities and holidays. In this post I will tell you all about what to do in Örebro during the four seasons.

Autumn (Höst in Swedish)

Autumn is the start of the academic year. The most important activities for all students will be the introduction weeks. Whether you are an exchange student or a master's student, Örebro University and its studentk union will organise 3-5 weeks full of parties, experiences and opportunities to meet new friends! With highlights like Örebro Day, the volleyball tournament and a visit to Ikea.

After the introduction, there will still be plenty to do. Explore the city, go for a walk/hike in nature (like Oset or Ånnaboda), celebrate Cinnamon Bun Day ('Kanelbullens dag') on the 4th of October or throw a Halloween party with your new friends!

VINTER (Vinter in Swedish)

Winter in Örebro can be cold and dark, with on the shortest day only 6 hours of daylight. Luckily for us, there is plenty to do in and around Örebro during this time of the year.

Behrn Arena (ice hockey club) has a free indoor ice skating hall, with the opportunity to rent ice skates for free from Fritidsbanken. This is also the perfect time of year to watch a professional Ice Hockey match at Bern Arena.

During the winter, Sweden celebrates the Lucia festival. This is a festival of light, symbolising the triumph of light over winter darkness. They are also crazy about christmas so make sure to visit some Christmas Markets, for example the one in Wadköping.

Also, don’t forget to look out for the Northern Lights this time of year!

SPRING (Vår in Swedish)

Spring in Örebro can still be cold, but the days are getting longer again, and trees are slowly getting their colour back.

An important fika item during this time are semlor. Semlor are traditional Swedish cardamom-flavoured sweet buns, filled with almond paste and whipped cream. You can only find these at the end of February and the beginning of March!

A month later, Valborg is celebrated on April 30th. This is a spring festival marked by choral singing, bonfires and gatherings to welcome the new season (and for students, parties). On the evening of Valborg at Örebro Castle there will be a bonfire celebration.

SUMMER (Sommar in Swedish)

Summer! For many international students , it will be bitter sweet. It’ s time to go home, say goodbye to the friends we made during the year and for many master students, receive our diplomas after a year (or two) of hard work.

However, if you are staying in Örebro for a bit longer, it will be a great opportunity to experience a Swedish summer, with walks through nature, city trips and swimming in lake Hjälmaren. It also has Midsommar. This is a joyful celebration with maypole dancing, flower crowns, traditional foods, and gathering with family and friends to honour the longest day of the year.

What season are you looking forward to the most?
