Lab rules
There are several sources of risk in a lab, and for everyone’s safety, the following basic rules must be followed in all laboratories at the Örebro University (local differences may occur, consult with lab manager):
- Long hair should be put up in a tassel, braid or similar.
- It is not allowed to wear perfume or other strong scents in the lab.
- Jewelry such as rings, necklaces and bracelets may not be worn in the lab. The same applies to false nails, the nails must be short. Avoid wearing contact lenses.
- Outerwear, extra clothing and bags are stored outside the lab.
- It is forbidden to eat, chew gum, drink, smoke, chew tobacco, put on makeup, or use hand cream in the lab. No food or drink is allowed, water bottles are never to be filled using the water taps.
- Never taste chemicals or other laboratory material, nor pipette using the mouth.
- Use the correct type of protective equipment during a lab. The risk assessment determines which type of protective equipment must be used (lab coat, closed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, respiratory protective equipment, etc.). A general rule is that lab coat, closed shoes and safety glasses must always be used. Gloves are used when necessary.
- Wear long and non-tight pants under the lab coat, i.e., no skirts, dresses, or leggings. In machine labs, wearing clothes that do not flutter and that risk getting caught in machines is crucial.
- Protective equipment/gloves must never be worn in the lunchroom or anywhere else outside the lab, as they may be contaminated.
- Work in a fume hood or use a laboratory extraction arm when needed.
- Never leave an open flame or have an open flame near flammable chemicals or flammable gas.
- Turn off electrical appliances, gas, and water when not in use unless handling and safety instructions state otherwise.
- Wash your hands when you have finished working in the lab.
- Work surfaces and equipment must be cleaned according to routines after use.
- Handle waste according to the university’s routines.
