Radiation protection

The most important radiation safety rules are decided by the Swedish Parliament. They are set out in the Radiation Protection Act, the Swedish Environmental Code, and in the Radiation Protection Ordinance. The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM) is under the authority of the Government and falls under the responsibility area of the Ministry of the Environment.

SSM has a comprehensive responsibility in the areas of radiation protection, nuclear safety and nuclear non-proliferation. The Authority works proactively and preventively to protect people and the environment from unwanted effects of radiation by drawing up rules (regulations), determining applications for permits for activities involving radiation and carrying out supervision of operators. The regulations are binding and their violation is punishable. Guidance and general advice are available for the regulations.
