About Hong Zhang

With MD and PhD, I became a “docent” in experimental oncology and in biomedicine. As an associate (biträdande) professor, I am now working at School of Medical Sciences, Örebro University.
Research and future plan
I have been working with medical research since 1985, and have set up broad international and national collaborations, working with a variety of research projects. As a major and co-supervisor, I have been guiding several post-doctors, PhD students, master students and other research students. As main and co-applicant, I have received various international and national research grants. Together with my co-workers, I have published >100 scientific publications in various international journals including Lancet, JCO, JNCI, etc., reviews and chapter of book.
Colorectal cancer is a common malignancy and one of the most predominant causes of death in cancer. Although long-standing efforts on early diagnosis and efficient treatment have improved patient survival, the successes have not been fully confirmed, and the benefits from radiotherapy and chemotherapy are still under investigation. Molecular biology study to identify genetic alterations of colorectal cancer should lead to improvements in early diagnosis and may provide precise method to select patients benefiting from radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Teaching and future plan
I have been deeply engaged in university teaching from ground to advanced courses in pathology, tumour biology, endocrinology, pharmacology and toxicology. I have been involved in problem based learning (PBL) in medicine and biomedicine. My strong desire is to improve the quality and quantity in our medical program: such as to create video golden lectures from the best lectures; to contribute more high quality lectures in cancer biology and pathology; to create more efficient model of PBL including to introduce my modified PBL methods to the PBL teaching; and to qualify a tutorship in PBL etc.
