Several studies shows that nurses today to a greater extent than before leaving the profession too early. In line with this, a reduction in the number of specialized nurses has been noticed in Sweden since the mid-1990s. The nurses’ turnover has negative consequences for both the individual and society. Several factors may contribute to this trend. A major contributing factor suggested is a lack of motivation (work-related motivation). Degree of motivation can affect both the quality and content of care. The knowledge available today about what motivates nurses to stay, and further developed within the profession is lacking. Thus, there is a great need for reliable and valid instruments as the basis for both to identify factors that may influence the motivation of health care professionals and also enable the development of interventions to promote motivation. The project aims included both to identify and compile existing instruments that have demonstrated reliability and validity regarding work-related motivation and to translate and validate the selected instrument to a Swedish context. Literature review and translation and psychometric analyses are planned.
