Credit transfer at doctoral level
A credit transfer is a decision that is regulated by the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance. Within a doctoral education, a credit transfer means that courses or equivalent knowledge acquired before admission to the doctoral education, or through studies at another higher education institution, may be counted towards the credit-bearing course and knowledge requirements set out in the general syllabus.
As a doctoral student, you may apply to have previous education or equivalent knowledge and skills recognised as part of your doctoral education. In the doctoral education, credit transfer, or recognition of prior learning, means that, following an assessment, the credit-bearing course or knowledge requirements specified in the general syllabus are deemed to have been fulfilled through courses or equivalent knowledge acquired prior to admission to the doctoral education, or during your doctoral studies at another higher education institution.
This may, for example, include courses that you have taken at another university, courses from previous studies or parts of scholarly work, such as manuscripts or articles.
In order to apply for credit transfer, you must be a student/doctoral student. If you have never been admitted to or registered at Örebro University, you are therefore not eligible to apply for credit transfer.
You can find more information about credit transfer in the University's administrative procedure.
Before applying for credit transfer
Before applying, you need to keep in mind that a credit transfer of courses and qualifications completed before admission to the doctoral programme may affect your subsequent studies by shortening the duration of the programme. However, this does not apply to courses taken at other higher education institutions during your ongoing doctoral studies for the purpose of meeting the course requirements specified in the general syllabus.
If you are unsure about the consequences, you are advised to discuss the matter with your supervisor before submitting your application.
How to apply for credit transfer
When an application for credit transfer is assessed, the objectives, content and scope of the qualifications or courses specified in the application are evaluated against the learning outcomes of the education for which you are applying for credit transfer. It is therefore important that you have these aspects documented and that you submit the correct supporting documentation with your application. If you need further information or assistance with the process, you can contact the education and research administrator at the school where you are studying.
Applications are made via Ladok for students.
Doctoral students who do not have a Swedish personal identity number cannot apply via Ladok for students. For further information and assistance with applying for credit transfer, please contact the research administrator at the school where you are studying.
Appeal against a decision on credit transfer
If your application has been rejected in whole or in part, you have the right to appeal the decision. Information on how to appeal is provided in the decision that you receive. The appeal must be submitted in writing and received by the Registry at Örebro University within three weeks of the date on which you received the decision.
Please note that you may only appeal a decision that is based on the qualifications and supporting documentation that you submitted with your original application. If you are dissatisfied with a rejection of an application and want to submit additional qualifications, you should not appeal the decision you have received. Instead, you should submit a new application in which you attach all the qualifications and the documents on which you wish your application to be based.
