Film, Philosophy and Science, 7.5 Credits

We normally associate audiovisual media like film and video with fictional storytelling, entertainment, documentaries, news, art, or social media. This course shifts the focus: how can film/video also serve as medium for philosophical and scientific works? Already existing philosophy and science can of course be woven into feature films or presented as part of documentaries or educational films or videos. The course addresses that too. But it also addresses more radical questions: Can philosophers and scientists use film/video – rather than only writing – to formulate new philosophical and scientific work? We look at how theorists and scientist have used film/video in the past, how audiovisual media is used today, and how they may be used in the near future.
