Admitted to Örebro University? Congratulations! Here’s your essential checklist with everything you need to know and do before, during and after your studies with us.

Visa and residence permit

In general, citizens of an EU/EEA country do not need a residence permit to study in Sweden.

If you are a citizen of a country outside the EU/EEA, you will in most cases need a residence permit to study in Sweden. You should not apply for a residence permit until you have received your Notification of Selection Results and have paid the first instalment of your tuition fees. Please note that Örebro University cannot assist with the visa or residence permit application process; however, we have compiled some useful links under "Useful resources for information on residence permit" below that may help guide you through the process.

If you are a citizen of Switzerland you must apply for a residence permit upon arrival if you are staying in Sweden for more than three months.

Örebro University is not able to assist with the residence permit application process. However, we have compiled some useful links and information below that may help guide you.

Moving to and from Sweden

Örebro is located in the heart of Sweden, making it easily accessible by various modes of transport. Örebro University has four campuses, but currently all international Master’s programmes are offered at our main campus, Campus Örebro.

Here you can find our travel guide on how to reach Örebro and Örebro University.

For international students, learning Swedish can make everyday life easier and help you feel more at home. While many Swedes speak excellent English, knowing Swedish can significantly enhance your experience—especially if you plan to stay long-term or want to work alongside your studies.

Currently, Örebro University does not offer Swedish courses for Master’s students, but there are other opportunities to learn the language.

Swedish for Immigrants (SFI)

Swedish for Immigrants (Svenska för invandrare) is a language education program for those who are new to Sweden and do not yet speak Swedish. The course focuses on speaking, reading, and writing in Swedish, with practical training for everyday life and work. SFI aims to give you a basic knowledge of the Swedish language, and it is available at different levels to suit everyone.

SFI is a free program organized by Örebro Municipality.

Registration: Apply online using your mobile BankID or Freja eID+ by logging in through the provided link.

If you do not have BankID or Freja eID+, Elevsupport can help you complete your registration. For that you need to visit them in person.

If you are staying in Sweden for more than one year (if you are admitted to a two years Master's programme) you must register as a resident with the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket).

You must schedule an appointment at your nearest Swedish state service centre and attend it in person with all the necessary documents. The specific requirements depend on your citizenship, but your passport is always required and must be valid for the duration of your stay.

How to book an appointment and necessary documents

Nearest Swedish state service center

Statens servicecenter Örebro
Näbbtorgsgatan 10

Once registered, you will receive a Swedish personal identity number (personnummer). This number is used when dealing with government authorities, banks, and other services in Sweden.

More information about Swedish personal identity numbers

Wait for your Swedish personal identity number – this may take some time, so book your appointment as soon as possible after registering at Örebro University.

After receiving your Swedish personal identity number

If you are admitted to a one year Master's Programme and are staying in Sweden for less than a year you can obtain a Coordination Number (Samordningsnummer), although it is not mandatory.

A Coordination Number allows public agencies to identify you. You only need to apply for one if necessary, for example, to pay taxes in Sweden—such as when you take a part-time job and do not have a Swedish personal identity number.

Read more about Coodination Numbers

You can apply for a Coordination Number online or in person at a Swedish Tax Agency office. The documents required vary depending on your country of citizenship. Note that you must visit a Tax Agency office in person for an identity verification.

Health and Insurance

Students who are citizens an EU/EEA country or Switzerland should bring their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), issued by the social insurance authority in their home country.

With a valid EHIC, you are entitled to the same medical services as Swedish citizens for urgent medical care. Remember to always bring the card when seeking medical care.

Information about the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)

All fee-paying students are covered by "FAS+ - The Swedish State’s Insurance for Fee-Paying Students" (on the condition that your tuition fees for the semester are paid in full).

This insurance includes accident coverage, costs for home transport in case of illness or accident, liability coverage, legal expenses and property coverage.

We recommend that you carefully review their conditions to determine whether you need additional insurance.

Terms and Conditions Insurance for students who pay tuition fees (FAS+)

The insurance provided by the university is valid from two weeks before the start of the official semester until two weeks after the semester has officially ended. Örebro University informs the Swedish Migration Agency that our fee paying students are covered by FAS+, which means that you do not have to present an insurance certificate with your application for a residence permit for studies.

The centre also offers activities, lectures, and workshops to help you explore various methods and practices for self-help and preventive mental health care.

You are welcome to book an appointment with one of our counsellors.

Documents and Certificates

Your Notification of Selection Results is available as a PDF file via universityadmissions.se and serves as an official document. A link to your PDF will be available a few days after publication of the selection results in the 'Application' section of your account.

If you are a tuition-fee–paying student, the Notification of Selection result serves as proof during your residence permit application that you are covered by FAS+ health insurance. Therefore, you do not need to submit a separate insurance certificate when applying for a residence permit for studies.

The registration certificate serves as proof that you are currently registered for a course at Örebro University. You will not automatically receive a Registration Certificate, but you can generate a digital certificate yourself in Studenttjänster. Log in to Studenttjänster using your ORU account. Digital certificates can be created by clicking the button Ladok Student and then the tab Transcripts and certificates.

You will not automatically receive a Transcript of Records, but you can generate a digital transcript presenting your grades yourself in Studenttjänster. Log in to Studenttjänster using your ORU account. Digital transcripts can be created by clicking the button Ladok Student and then the tab Transcripts and certificates.

Uncomplete transcripts
Please note that it may take up to three weeks after your exam the grade to be reported in our system. If your grade does not appear or your transcript is incomplete, please contact the responsible study administrator for the course.

When you have completed your studies, you will need to apply for your degree certificate in Studenttjänster, as it is issued only upon request and not automatically. The application is free of charge. Please note that degree certificates are only issued digitally from 1 January 2024.

During your studies

Living costs in Örebro vary depending on your individual lifestyle and habits.

Many students choose to cook their own meals and bring lunch in a food box. There are microwaves available on campus for heating your food.

You can also save money by shopping at second-hand stores, which are widely available throughout Örebro.

Keep in mind that eating out and traveling can be relatively expensive, so it’s a good idea to plan your budget accordingly.

If you are a student requiring a residence permit, you must demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to support yourself during your studies.
The Swedish Migration Agency requires proof of at least SEK 10,584 per month of study (for applications made in 2025).

If you are a citizen of an EU/EEA country, you don’t need a permit work in Sweden. If you are a citizen from a country outside the EU/EEA, you are currently allowed to work during the duration of your studies and residence permit. However, regulations may change, so it is your responsibility to always check the latest information from the Swedish Migration Agency.

Please note that all our Master's programmes are given as full-time programmes and require 40 hours of study a week. Hence your studies might be difficult to combine with work. Opportunities for part-time work in Sweden are limited and most jobs require knowledge of Swedish, so we stongly recommend you that you should not plan on finding a job to support yourself financially.

Arbetsförmedlingen is Sweden's largest employment agency. Click on the link below for more information.

Swedish Public Employment Service

You might need a Registration Certificate when applying, to show that you are an active student. For information on how to obtain this, please read more under the section Documents and CertificatesRegistration Certificate.

To apply, please follow the steps on their website:
How do I apply for a Mecenat card?

If you are asked to provide your personal identity number and do not have one, please use the T-number included in your Notification of Selection Result. You can also find this number on your Registration Certificate.
