Laboratory Safety Manual

Allergenic substances

The provisions of AFS 2023:10, Chapter 8, apply to the following allergenic substances:

  • Hazardous chemical products that meet the criteria in Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP) to be labelled with the hazard statements
  • H317 may cause an allergic skin reaction, or
  • H334 may cause allergy or asthma symptoms or breathing difficulties if inhaled.

H317 and H334 may contain acrylates, epoxy plastic components, formaldehyde resins, or organic acid anhydrides,

  • Chemical substances and mixtures containing ethyl-2-cyanoacrylate, or methyl-2-cyanoacrylate.
  • Isocyanates released during thermal decomposition.
  • Formaldehyde released during processes.

Before starting work with allergenic substances, a risk assessment must be carried out. If the risk assessment shows that exposure to allergenic substances is negligible and that protective measures are therefore not needed for safety, then the requirements of the regulation on allergenic substances can be disregarded. Special training is required for those who manage or carry out work that involves exposure to allergenic substances.
