Explosives

Explosives can exist in a solid or liquid form or a mixture, which through a chemical reaction, can generate gases of sufficient temperature, pressure and velocity to damage the immediate surroundings. Examples of explosives are gunpowder, explosives, ammunition, and fireworks. According to legislation, a permit is required for almost all activities involving explosives. A permit is needed whereby the municipality can check that explosives are handled safely and following the law.

  • It is the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) that issues permits for the manufacture, processing, destruction and recycling of explosives and other handling in connection with those as mentioned earlier and cross-border transfer, import and export as well as the Armed Forces’ handling of explosives at fixed locations.
  • It is the municipality that issues permits for the use, storage, trade and transfer as well as transfer of explosives within Sweden. An application for a permit for explosives is sent to the Nerike Fire Department (Nerikes Brandkår).
