About James Lancaster

James Lancaster holds a PhD in history. His dissertation, Humanitarians at Home: Swedish Civil Society Actors, Refugee Aid and Advocacy 1951 – 1991, is available open access and can be found here.

Research
James's areas of interest primarily focus on modern history and migration studies. His dissertation examined the strategic advocacy work of non-profit organizations within the field of migration politics, the role transnational networks played in establishing legitimacy and opening up space för negotiating with and influencing the Swedish state, as well as  practical efforts to support refugees arriving in Sweden during the Cold War.

Teaching
In 2025, James Lancaster is serving as a substitute lecturer in the following courses: History in Society, Early History (to 1500), Ethical Perspectives on History and History Education, Swedish Culture and Language I, and Social Studies Subjects, F–3: History.


He has previously taught courses such as Norm-Critical Perspectives on History and History Education, Early History (to 1500), Historical Research Essay (as a supervisor), Historical Narratives, and Imagining Sweden – Swedish History and Culture since the 19th Century (as course coordinator and course developer).
