About Maria Lodefalk

Maria Lodefalk is a consultant paediatrician at the Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, Örebro University Hospital, and affiliated researcher and post doc at Örebro University. Her clinical specialisation is paediatric endocrinology, that is, the investigation and treatment of various hormonal diseases in children. Her research focuses on various paediatric endocrine conditions as well as on foetal imprinting.

Maria Lodefalk was awarded her PhD in 2009 at Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, on a thesis on type 1 diabetes in adolescents, focusing on eating habits and gastrointestinal function. Her more recent research examines pubertal disorders, hyperthyroidism and investigations of suspected growth hormone deficiencies in children, but also gene and protein expression in placenta tissue, with the purpose of gaining an understanding of how the intrauterine environment affects the growth and development of the foetus. Maria Lodefalk oversees a large bank containing placenta samples and umbilical cord blood samples at Örebro University Hospital.

Maria Lodefalk is assistant supervisor of three doctoral students at Örebro University: Marianne Allbrand, Hanna Östling and Maria Rodanaki.

Maria Lodefalk is a regular lecturer on diabetes and other endocrine disorders in children on the Specialist Nursing Programme for Paediatric Care, as well as on embryonic sexual differentiation on the Programme in Medicine at Örebro University. She was recently made examiner of the module in medicine on the Specialist Nursing Programme for Paediatric Care. Maria Lodefalk has also filled the role of PBL group tutor and personal mentor, and has supervised a large number of Bachelor’s dissertations, as well as a Master’s dissertation on the Programme of Medicine at Örebro University. A speaker at various national meetings and courses, in the last few years she has also presented her research at several international conferences.

Collaboration and assignments

Since January 2017, Maria Lodefalk is a substitute member of the Swedish Ethical Review Authority. She is a member of Tillväxtgruppen, a committee currently updating the Swedish national guidelines for the investigation on growth hormone deficiency and growth hormone therapy in children. In recent years, Maria Lodefalk has organised, in collaboration with Professor Ola Nilsson, a number of regional conferences on paediatric endocrinology in Örebro. She cooperates with the University Healthcare Research Center (UFC) in Region Örebro County, as well as with researchers in Uppsala, Denmark and German.
