Lundell's research mainly concerns the cultural history of the media, specifically the ideology, self-image, and strivings for legitimacy of the newspaper press, participatory media forms, actor networks within the media sector and far right-wing media strategies.
Intellectual collaboration with the Third Reich: Treason or reason?, an anthology he edited with colleagues at Uppsala University, came out in the summer of 2019. In December 2019, together with colleagues at Umeå University, he published a media history overview entitled (in translation) "Media History: From Big Bang to Big Data". From 2020, among other things, he is involved in the project "Information flows across the Baltic Sea: Swedish-language press as cultural communicator 1771–1918", funded by SLS (the Swedish Literature Society in Finland).
