About Steffen Keiter

My research focuses on fundamental questions in vertebrate molecular physiology, with particular emphasis on how cellular signalling networks and genetic as well as epigenetic regulatory mechanisms shape organismal responses to environmental stress. Using zebrafish alongside complementary fish-derived cell lines, I investigate how chemical exposures and climate-related stressors influence transcriptional regulation, metabolic pathways, developmental processes, and neurobehavioral outcomes. A key objective is to investigate mechanistic links between molecular initiating events and integrated physiological responses across multiple levels of biological organization. To achieve this, my group combines hypothesis-driven and high-throughput approaches, including transcriptomics (RNA-Seq), DNA methylation profiling, high-content and live-cell imaging, behavioural phenotyping, cell painting-based phenomics, and CRISPR/dCas9-mediated gene modulation to dissect underlying regulatory mechanisms.
